The Ital Reding Estate

Encounter with Schwyz

The Ital Reding Estate is one of the most treasured building-groups of the canton Schwyz. Inside its enclosing walls are located the manor house, the Bethlehem House, the former farm building (today the Cantonal Library) as well as the stable.

The construction of the manor-house was begun in 1609 by Ital Reding. In front of the main house lies a baroque garden with a pavilion on each side. The manor's great asset is its splendid interior. On the ground floor there is the large garden room, below it a vaulted cellar. The sumptuous rooms with their richly panelled walls and ceilings are located on the first floor as was the tradition of the time.

The Bethlehem House, built in 1287, is an unique witness to the origin of the Swiss Confederacy. The stone built ground floor includes a room with murals dating from the 16th century. The furnishing and interior decoration of the wooden house come from different periods.
